Why Protein Matters on GLP-1s
If you’re taking Mounjaro (tirzepatide) or another GLP-1 medication, you’ve probably noticed a big change in your appetite. Eating less can help with weight loss, but it also raises an important question: are you getting enough protein?
- Protein preserves muscle: Rapid weight loss can reduce both fat and muscle. Protein helps maintain lean muscle mass.
- Protein keeps you full: Protein-rich foods take longer to digest, reducing hunger and cravings.
- Protein supports metabolism: Muscle burns more calories at rest, so preserving it keeps your metabolism healthier.
How Much Protein Do You Need?
Most adults need around 1.2–1.6 g of protein per kg of body weight per day
For a 70 kg person, that’s about 85–110 g daily. That said, you may find this number incredibly tough to reach while a) living in a bigger body and b) taking medications that significantly reduce your appetite. So, what would be a good way to understand and meet your protein needs? Aim for your protein source to represent half of your meal, or half of a small dinner plate.
- Lean meats (chicken, turkey, lean beef)
- Fish and seafood
- Eggs and Greek yogurt
- Plant-based options: tofu, tempeh, seitan, and high-protein meat alternatives, and to a lesser extent lentils and chickpeas
- Protein shakes or bars (especially if you struggle with appetite)
Easy Tips to Boost Protein
- Learn how much protein is in the protein rich foods you usually consume
- Add eggs or Greek yogurt to your breakfast
- Choose a protein-rich snack like hummus or cottage cheese
- Include beans or lentils in soups and salads
- Spread protein intake throughout the day, rather than just at one or 2 meals
- Keep a protein shake handy if you can’t finish a meal
While protein is crucial for weight loss whilst taking weight loss medications, it’s important to note that a healthy balanced diet still plays an important role in weight loss and weight maintenance. By prioritising a variety of fruit and veg, and whole carbohydrates, more significant weight loss and greater overall health outcomes can be achieved. All this to say, protein is important, but balance is key.
